ELEMENTARY LITERACY LEVEL VERSUS LIVING STANDARDS AND QUALITY OF LIFE IN ADULTHOOD

Journal Title: Educational Psychology - Year 2012, Vol 44, Issue 1

Abstract

Summary: The author poses the following question: What effects do the successes and failures in the area of key cultural skills acquired in elementary school have in adulthood? In the text, the author refers to the findings of a long-term longitudinal study conducted under his direction by a team of Toruń-based educational sociologists. The study was carried out with the same cohort of people between 1972 and 2000. The starting sample included over 7,500 students graduating from elementary school; the final findings, analyzed based on detailed biographical interviews, were collected from over 1,050 forty-year-olds. The findings indicate a significant segregated role of school in shaping access to participation in culture. Detailed empirical records of the study are included in Zbigniew Kwieciński’s books: Wykluczanie [Exclusion], Nieuniknione [Inevitable] and Bezbronni [The Helpless].
