Enuresis Frequency, Mother Attitude and Related Factors in First Class Students: Aydın Sample

Abstract
Aim: This study was conducted cross-sectional to determine the frequency of enuresis, mothers’ attitudes and related factors in the first grade primary school students. Material and Methods: The sample was composed of 425 mothers in Aydın Province Center in 2014-2015. The questionnaire forms consisted questionnaire form of 19 questions and Parents Attitude Research Instruments (PARI). The children were evaluated according to the DSM-V criteria and the children who complied with these criteria were considered to be enuresis. The obtained data was evaluated with Pearson Chi-square and Student-t tests. Results: It was found that 54.1% of the students were female (n=230), 45% were male (n=195) and the mean age was 6.80±0.48. 25.4% of the students had enuresis problem, children with enuresis had joint families than children without enuresis and that they have a sibling born in the last year, sometimes mother-child relationship problems, physical violence by the mother and that there is a restriction on the child’s activities, mothers and fathers were found to have enuresis problems in childhood. Mothers of children with enuresis problems were determine to have significantly higher scores on the scale of wife and husband incapacity than those of children without enuresis problems (p<0.05). Conclusion: The prevalence of enuresis among the students was found to be 25.4% and the result that family relations affected enuresis. When the results are evaluated in general, increasing the number of similar researches in primary school 1st grade students and providing support, education and counseling may contribute to reducing enuresis which is an important problem in childhood. In addition, it is suggested that deeper research on enuresis in children with different characteristics, especially using qualitative research methods.
