Abstract
The article deals with the role of borrowings in English geographical terminology. Borrowings are considered as elements of foreign origin with different degrees of their assimilation and as the process of transition from one language to another. It is underlined that the process of borrowing lexical units from one language to another is complex and many-sided and it is one of the most productive ways of nominating new phenomena. The vocabulary penetration occurs intensively and it influences all levels of the language system. It is proved that the English language borrowed a great number of geographical terms from different languages of the world. New words came not only from Indo-European languages but also from languages of other families. The majority of geographical terms were borrowed from Latin and Greek either directly or through intermediary languages. The attention is drawn to the fact that due to the process of borrowing Greek elements in the English geographical terminology there appeared lexical units that had not existed in classical languages. Thus, borrowings are viewed as the product of continuous historical development of the English language. In the article main chronological periods of borrowings are determined. It is underlined that the degree of cultural and historical contacts intensity can be defined due to borrowings. Linguistic and extra-linguistic factors of borrowing lexical units are identified. It is proved that the existence of borrowed geographical terms is determined by historical, economic, social, territorial, and cultural factors. It is emphasized that despite the fact that in the English language there exist a great number of borrowed words the language did not lose its uniqueness. Borrowings enriched its vocabulary.
