EVALUATION OF DLC BASED COATINGS RESISTANCE TO INSTANTANEOUS DAMAGE UNDER SLIDING FRICTION CONDITIONS WITH DISTILLED WATER OR SALINE LUBRICATION

Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2009, Vol 226, Issue 4

Abstract

As a result of research on the evaluation of tribological properties of ultra thin DLC based ceramic coatings in flat sliding contacts lubricated with distilled water or saline a series of instantaneuos damage resistance tests was carried out. The research was targeted at water lubricated bearings and bio – medical applications, thus DLC coatings were deposited on annealed stainless steel substrate. Two types of coatings were used: hydrogenated unmodified DLC and tungsten modified DLC (DLC – W). In the paper results are presented of tests carried out to determine the p – v input parameters envelope for both coatings and both lubricants dividing mild wear of coatings from instantaneous damage leading to intense delamination of the coating. Results are given in the form of approximated boundary condition curves.
