EVALUATION OF SELECTED BLOOD MORPHOLOGIC PARAMETERS AND ERYTHROPOIETIN IN MEMBERS OF MT. ELBRUS CLIMBING EXPEDITION

Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2008, Vol 24, Issue 1

Abstract

Background. The aim of the study was to assess the changes of blood morphologic parameters i.e. red bloods cells (RBC), haemoglobin (HGB), haemotocrit (HCT) erythrocytic indexes (MCV, MCH, MCHC), leucocytes (WBC) as well as erythropoietin (EPO) following the Mt. Elbrus climbing expoedition.Material and method. 18 persons took part in the expedition. 9 men agreed to take part in the research. The mean age of all studied group was 28,6 +/- 5,9 year. The expedition lasted from 1 August to 15 August 2006. The way from Poland to the first base camp in Azau, which lies at an altitude of 2400 meters, took four days. The three base camps were set at the altitude of 3300, 4200 and 4800 meters. The morphologic parameters were determined in the whole blood by means of MICROS 60 analyzed (ABX). Erythropoietin was determined in blood serum by RIA method.Results. The morphologic parameters and erythropoietin before the expedition and 14 days after were at physiological levels. The only tendency to the decrease in the number of leucocytes (WBC, p<0,06) and increase in mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCH, p<0,07) were found.Conclusions. MCH is the forward sensitivity parameter representing the changes in erythrocyte system under (conditions of) extreme effort. It was found that 14-day-long period following the climbing expedition is the period in which the rest morphologic parameters and EPO reach their initial values.
