Experimental Optimization on Delamination During Fabrication of GLARE Fiber Metal Laminates

Abstract

Fiber metal laminates (FMLs) are the composite layers, i.e. like a sandwiched. Glass laminate, aluminium reinforced epoxy (GLARE) is an advanced material because of its high impact strength, high strength – to – weight ratio, excellent fatigue crack resistance and high stiffness –to- weight ratio. Delamination of GLARE during fabrication has not been addressed separately in the literature. The focus of the present experimental work is to optimize the processing parameters and reduce delamination during the fabrication of GLARE by hand layup process with the aid of special mold to avoid resin leakage and to get a good surface finish. Initial trials on machining of GLARE by Abrasive Water Jet machining have been carried out using the Parameters taken from the literature. Curing temperature and curing duration are considered for analyzing delamination during fabrication and machining. Also, macroscopic images were taken and investigated in MATLAB in order to understand the quality of delamination. Curing temperature and curing duration is are seen as the most significant factors during fabrication. The surface finish is also influences the curing temperature than that of other parameters.
