Abstract

The information about the crisis, its development and the consequences for the Bulgarian economy and finances is proliferated by the media. The article focuses specifically on the manner in which the media constructs the image of the crisis through the use of metaphor and phraseology which is characteristic of the representation of natural disasters or pandemics. The use of the various metaphors is motivated by the strategies chosen by the authors to convince the addressee in the truthfulness of the theses and statements which they expound. The endeavour to write in an attractive and expressionist way in publications which reflect the crisis in various spheres of economic and financial life also finds expression in the use of different manifestations of wordplay, the most frequent amongst which is citation (the transformation of citations) and word formation – the creation of occasionalisms. The linguistic characteristics which are shown and analyzed in the article demonstrate the various interests of the participants in the process of communication and their use in the media texts is connected with the authors’ endeavour to achieve a more powerful impact on the recipient through a combination of the informational, recreational, as well as the suggestive function of language.
