Factors influencing the choice of treatment method by patients

Abstract
AIM: The aim of the study was to determine the relationbetween patient’s rights for free treatment and thechoice of treatment method. MATERIAL AND METHOD:The material for the study were dental histories of5797 patients treated at the Department of Jaw Orthopedicsin Lublin in the years 1995-2005.The patients were dividedinto three age groups: Group 1 – young childrenunder 13 fully entitled to free treatment with removableappliances under the national health care system (4222patients); Group 2 – children age 13-18 who were no longerentitled to free treatment (1145 patients), Group 3 –over age 18 (430 patients). The patients were divided accordingto sex: 3201 females and 2596 males. Obtainedresults were statistically analysed. RESULTS: Removableorthodontic appliances were mainly chosen by patients fromGroup 1. In Group 2 since 1998 a decreasing interest inthe treatment with removable appliances had been observed among females and a year later among males. In the studyperiod the majority of patients had started to choose thetreatment with fixed appliances since 2003. Patients inGroup 3 since 2001 had chosen the treatment with fixedappliances only. CONCLUSIONS: In the years 1995-2005an interest with orthodontic treatment increased amongmale patients, who preferred fixed appliances. Treatmentwith removable appliances was chosen mainly in Group 1.Patients from Group 2 and group 3 most often chose treatmentwith fixed appliances. Within 11 years the use of fixedappliances increased twice. (Orthod. Forum 2006; 2: 119-24)
