Family and school as sources of health-related information – students’ opinions

Journal Title: Medycyna Ogólna i Nauki o Zdrowiu - Year 2013, Vol 19, Issue 3

Abstract

Health education is a category of educational activities aimed at raising awareness and spurring‑on the activity of individuals in terms of health care and development. The effectiveness of the process depends on the quality of cooperation between school and family in the proper use of health‑related information from both mentioned sources. The purpose of the research was to gather the opinions of a selected group of primary, lower secondary and secondary school students on the significance of family and school as sources of health ‑related information and on the participation of their parents in the planning and implementation of health education at school. The opinions were gathered among 368 students of the last grades of primary, lower secondary and secondary school with a status of a Health‑Promoting School. The survey was conducted at the turn of May 2012. The diagnostic survey method was applied with the use of a questionnaire prepared by the authors. The results point to a relatively low significance of parents and school as sources of health‑related information attractive for the surveyed students. The percentage of students who stated that in their school health education does not exist, and also there are no persons who would be a good source of health‑related information, amounted to nearly 66%. A very small group of students claimed that such classes exist and are interesting (almost 12%). The usual subject matter of these classes did not always make the students think that persons conducting the classes are the best source of information on this issue. School and parents, two sources of very important health‑related information for students, do not cooperate with each other. Despite the students’ expectations towards the school to include parents in the activities related to health education, there are no visible signs of the school›s openness to such cooperation.Key words: student, parent, school, health education, health promotion
