Abstract

In the article the problem of defining the essence of the concepts «value» and «value orientations» is actualized; there have been made an attempt to ascertain the nature, content and specifics of the family values of personality and their role in the hierarchy of the human values. On the ground of the analysis of the scientific literature on the problems it has been ascertained that the human values are a major maxim in the structure of its individual personality, an integral part of spiritual human principles. It has been proved that the system of values is the principle dominant of individual's behaviour, the source of its motivation and criterion of self-esteem. Value orientations are defined as certain convictions of personality about the importance of values, awareness of their correctness, the necessity of commitment to them. So, value orientations, as a component of the human spiritual world, is a consequence of his / her free choice of values. The significance of the family values as a basis for building morally healthy civil society and the analysis of their content in historical retrospective have been represented in the article. For example H. Skovoroda pointed out that the first natural tutors and mentors for children are parents and children have to grow up in the atmosphere of deep respect and love to father and mother, who in their turn, have to take care of giving birth to healthy children, bringing-up thankfulness in them as one of the most important values of family life. K. D. Ushynskyi in his works wrote about the importance of friendly relationships between parents and children, friendship, love, and mutual respect in the family. Respect and love to the parents, paying homage to elderly people were considered by T. Shevchenko as moral dominants for the Ukrainian family. V.O. Suhomlynskyi gave emphasis to the family values which are important for personality formation; they are: respect for parents, the veneration of the mother, grandmother, women. In Ukrainian pedagogics the ideal of a family as a fundamental principle of human life was denoted. It was stated that this is the family that provides the formation and development of these best value orientations: labour as the most complete form of person’s creative abilities and capabilities, the source of abundance and joy of family life; spirituality is defined as a synthetic form of comprehension of the world and oneself in a single dimension conversion activity and humane attitude to the environment and people, citizenship as a sense of belonging to the native land, state, family, ways of life, traditions and customs, responsibility, development and accruement of the country’s welfare. The above mentioned family values, in their turn, promote high school students’ self-expression, self-development, self-realization, create conditions for potential development of the best human qualities in them.
