Abstract
The article concerns the creation of the Białystok Branch of the University of Warsaw, its functioning in the form of Teachers College and the transformation into an independent university. It discusses the fundamental changes in the organisational structure of the Bialystok Branch in the years 1968–1997, the range of assistance offered by the home institution (University of Warsaw) to the Bialystok Branch and the concept of connecting all Bialystok universities. In addition, the article presents various initiatives and actions of the local community and external institutions for the initiation of an independent university in Podlasie.<br/><br/>
