Foreign language learning in higher education institutions: approaches and principles

Abstract
The article analyzes three main approaches to teaching foreign languages to adult learners in higher education institutions, namely: action-based, communicative and learner-centered ones. The role of the learner-centered approach to teaching foreign languages in higher education institutions, which can be considered as leading in adult education, is emphasized, since it is oriented towards the personality of an adult student, his/her needs and abilities. The focus is made on one of the main tasks of the learner-centered learning, which is to form an adult learner’s ability to guide his / her educational activities, take full responsibility for decision-making and learning outcomes, that is to be an active participant of the educational process. In view of the role of an adult learner as an active participant of educational process in a learner-centered approach, the possibilities of its implementation are determined on the basis of andragogical principles, with consideration of the individual psychological characteristics of an adult learner, his/her ability to self-directed learning, big and diverse experience, goals, tasks, needs and interests in learning
