Forms of Preserving Ukrainian Traditions in Diaspora Electronic Publications of the USA (2012–2018)

Abstract

The article discovers forms of cultural preservation, ways of presenting the image of Ukraine through the cultural heritage, and specifics of their manifestation in many areas of life that stipulates celebration of national and religious holidays by Ukrainians both in Ukraine and outside their historical homeland. These occasions are: Independence Day, The Day of the National Flag, the Day of Unity of Ukraine, Baptism of Rus, Easter, St. Nicholas Day and Christmas, International Mother Language Day and World Embroidery Day); honoring the outstanding cultural figures and their anniversary dates (Mykola Lysenko, Yaroslav Stetsko, Lesia Ukrainka, Oleksii Dodiak, Andrii Melnyk, Olha Kobylianska and Avhusta Kokhanovska, Ivan Franko, Yosyf Slipyi, Vasyl Stus, etc.); celebration of jubilees of public organizations’ creation and anniversaries of events (the 60th anniversary of the school of the Ukrainian Musical Institute of America, the 70th anniversary of the creation of the UPA and the centers of the OUN in Holovanivsk district, the 50th anniversary of the Ukrainian Catholic University, and the decade of the New York Friends of UCU Foundation, the 25th anniversary of the Ukrainian Language Society in the United States, the 40th anniversary of the Ukrainian community, the 90th anniversary of the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America, the 20th anniversary of the Ukrainian Cultural Clock Center in Philadelphia, the 65th anniversary of the Ukrainian choir “Dumka”, etc.), theme nights (Volodymyr Ivasiuk tribute, family Malanka, vyshyvanka family holiday, “Red Kalyna” evening, embroidery party, etc.). The periodical diaspora publications analyzed by us illustrate the forms of cultural preservation and the ways of representing Ukraine’s image through cultural heritage, which is a multilevel structure and is defined as a system model. It is established that the contributors of American periodicals we have reviewed believe that the creative approach and the proper organization of various cultural and artistic events can encourage young people and the older generation to actively participate in the social and cultural life of the Ukrainian diaspora in the United States, since Ukrainian culture and art are the universal means of voluntary unity of different generations of our compatriots in different countries of the world.
