Journal Title: Medycyna Ogólna i Nauki o Zdrowiu - Year 2013, Vol 19, Issue 2
Abstract
Introduction. Physical activity, health and quality of life are interrelated. Regular physical activity not only prevents but may also hinder the development of numerous diseases of affluence, including spinal pains. Epidemiological data indicate that spinal pains are a serious problem among adolescents and even children. Aim. To determine the frequency of occurrence of spinal pains and to present leisure time activities among adolescents from the Biala Podlaska district suffering from and without spinal pains. Material and method. The study covered a group of 515 pupils (256 girls and 259 boys) aged 10–13 attending primary schools in the Biala Podlaska district. A questionnaire was used as the research tool. The collected research results were analyzed with the use of a non-parametric test based on Chi-square function. The level of statistical significance was p<0.05. Results. Spinal pains of various frequencies were mentioned by 203 (39.4%) subjects. Spinal pain experienced by the respondents was usually located in the lumbar segment, mentioned by nearly 63% of female and male pupils. The preferred leisure time activities among female and male pupils suffering from spinal pains included watching television and listening to music. Physical activity as the main leisure time activity was indicated by over 80% of boys and girls who did not complain of spinal pains. Conclusions. Spinal pain of various frequencies was reported by 203 pupils (39.4%). The pain was located mainly in the lumbar segment of the spine. Children and adolescents who did not experience spinal pain preferred active forms of spending leisure time, unlike those suffering from spinal pain who preferred passive leisure time activities.Key words: spinal pain, leisure time, children, adolescents
