Functional Outcome In The Management Of Distal Humerus Fracture With Open Reduction And Y-Plate Fixation

Abstract

Fractures of the distal end of the humerus account for 2–6% of all fractures and for about 30% of all elbow fractures in adults. The complexity of the elbow joint and its subcutaneous position makes these fractures difficult to treat and associated with high complication rate. Stiffness, pain, and deformity are more likely with inadequate treatment or prolonged immobilization..Restoration elbow movements requires anatomic reconstruction of the articular surface, stable fixation and early mobilization2. In this study a total of 12 patients, which includes 4 males and 8 females with distal humerus fractures were treated by open reduction and internal fixation with Y-plate.All the patients were followed up for a period ranging from 7 months to 11 months and functional outcome was assessed using Mayo’s elbow performance scoring system which shows excellent result in 4(33%)cases,Good in 6(50%)cases, Fair in 2(17%)cases and No poor outcome was seen.
