GENDER CATEGORIZATION OF FEMALE CHARACTERS IN THE ANIMATED DISCOURSE IN ENGLISH

Journal Title: ІНОЗЕМНА ФІЛОЛОГІЯ - Year 2016, Vol 129, Issue

Abstract

The article analyzes the linguistic means, cognitive mechanisms and parameters of the formation of gender display in the process of the categorization of female characters in animated discourse. In our study, gender is interpreted as a conventional ideological construct, which accumulates the ideas of what it means to be a man or a woman in a certain culture. Gender categorization of objects using linguistic means is embodied in the linguistic markers of generic classifi cation fi xed in the dictionary and grammar system. However, the discursive factor is extremely important in the English language, since the lack of clear grammatical markers of gender forces the communicants to rely on the context in which the representation of gender characteristics of the object is formed. Systemic language means mark the initial stage of gender categorization associated with the reference of an object to the domain of femininity or masculinity. The basic instruments of the language level, supporting gender categorization in English communication include personal and possessive pronouns she, he, his, her, the suffi xes -ess, -ette, -ine, marking gender, as well as gender marked lexical units containing the indication to the sex of the referent (woman, girl, king, mother, princess, etc.), and anthroponyms and vocatives. Pronouns of the third person singular (he and she) play a special role in gender categorization, serving as gender classifi ers and connecting elements in the transition towards a discursive representation of knowledge about gender. Gender reference of a ch aracter can be determined by direct reference to a female person by means of the language system (incomplete gender reference), or it may be accompanied by the deployment of the “gender display” with an appeal to the background gender knowledge (full gender reference). The analysis of the chosen animated fi lms from the point of view of the process of personifi cation of fi ction characters has revealed that the script writers, as well as the audience, largely rely on collective gender representations.
