GENRE PECULIARITY OF THE UKRAINIAN AND ENGLISH REALISTIC NOVEL

Abstract

The article under consideration is devoted to revealing the specific features of Ukrainian and English realistic novel. It is aimed to isolate all the possible genre elements in Ukrainian and English realistic novels using the comparative literature approach. The author depicts the essence of realism as a literary direction, highlights poetry of realistic character creation. It is stressed that some social and political factors played a very important role for the development of realistic literature in certain countries. It should be noted that the merit of realism is ground on the fact that it fundamentally attracted the atten- tion of artists to ordinary people, whose life was considered a pretext by poets of a low sphere that was not the subject of serious artistic representation. A realistic worldview is based on the fact that the world is a reality the laws that are peculiar to it, in whose system a person is included. And this reality is subject to scientific and artistic knowledge. W. Thackeray and Ch. Dickens appealed to their contemporary problems, including some social conflicts, moral contradictions and family relationship. It is stressed that psychological analysis plays a very important role in Ukrainian realistic novel development. The retrospective-confessional philosophy is elaborated on the qualified new level, which ascertains the inner history of man, his moral decline and rebirth. The Ukrainian novel denies the pseudo-version of its existence that the Ukrainian literature of the 19th century did not reach this level or did not have this genre at all. However, openness and not the canonical nature of the novel form cause the problem of its scientific interpretation. During the comparative analysis the general and distinctive genre tendencies of the realistic novel of Ukrainian and English literature are underlined. The general ones include: the tendency towards psychologism of prose, the violation of important problems of up-bringing and education (the trend of morality), the tendency to create typical characters in typical circumstances.
