Have you Encountered patients of Spinal Cord injury with shooting BP on 3rd/4th day?? A Review Article on Autonomic Dysreflexia

Abstract
Autonomic dysreflexia(AD) is a potentially life threatening medical emergency in polytrauma patients affecting individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI) above major splanchnic outflow (T6 or above). AD occurs due to wide spread hyper-reflex activity of sympathetic outflow afferents below the level of lesion. A pathognomic finding of Blood pressure being as high as >200 mm hg or 20 to 40 mm hg above the resting systolic level points towards AD. Presenting a case series of patients of polytrauma,two of which warranted icd insertion who presented with classical symptomatology of pounding headache with flushing and profuse sweating above the level of lesion while literature also depiciting skin pallor with piloerection below the level of lesion. Management warrants prompt and quicks steps-->head up,bladder catheterization, BP monitoring every 2 hours ,initial treatment with short acting anti hypertensive.
