HEALTH BENEFITS OF AN INTERVAL TRAINING ON A CYCLE ERGOMETER AMONG PATIENTS WITH CORONARY HEART DISEASE

Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2009, Vol 25, Issue 1

Abstract

Background. The aim of research was the assessment of health benefits experienced by pa-tients after a myocardial infarction and a coronary artery bypass grafting under the influence of inter-val training on a cycle ergometer. Materiał and methods. The research was conducted among 151 males with coronary heart di¬sease, 90 males after a myocardial infarction and 61 after a coronary artery bypass grafting. The re¬habilitation included 16 training sessions each consisted of 6 effort periods with a 2-minute inten/al. The impact of the training was assessed on the basis of an exercise test done according to a modified Bruce's protocol connected with the measurement of spirometric indices. The exercise test was done twice: before starting the period of rehabilitation and after finishing trainings on a cycle ergometer. Results. In the both subgroups, one noted the increase statistical significance of average values of tolerated workload and walked distance as well as significant increase of effort tolerance on the Borg's scalę. Patients reached higher peak values of heart ratę and efforfs systolic blood pressure, in conseąuence effort double product increased. In the case of both subgroups one noted the incre¬ase of average VE and V02max values and significant increase of effort time up to exceeding 1,0 of respiratory exchange ratio. Conclusions. Beneficial physiological effects of inten/al training turned out to be similar in the ca¬se of both evaluated groups.
