Journal Title: Dermatologia Kliniczna - Year 2006, Vol 8, Issue 3
Abstract
Heinrich Köbner (1838-1904) was one of the founders of German dermatology. He was born in Breslau (now Wrocław), where he also went to school, studied medicine and worked. As a medical student he had the opportunity to learn from the most outstanding representatives of Breslau medicine, like the internist and hepatologist Friedrich Frerichs. Köbner's deep interest in dermatology started under the influence of one of the greatest German-speakingdermatologists, Ferdinand von Hebra, whom he met in Vienna. Köbner went then to Paristo learn from the greatest French scholars. Afterthe return to Breslau he founded a private polyclinic of dermatology, which also served as the base forteachingstudents and physicians. His clinical observations in dermatology belongto the canon of dermatology, especially his research on the pathogenesis of psoriasis, description of the isomorphic phenomenon (Köbner's phenomenon) and the first description of epidermolysis bullosa hereditaria. He also demonstrated that sycosis parasitaria and eczema marginatum are mycotic infections, found some efficacy of chrysarobin in the treatment of psoriasis, and describeddrug-induced skin reactions.Takingaccountof his clinical observations and research, Köbner obtainedhabilitationatthe University of Breslau in 1869. After many efforts he succeeded in founding the Teaching Department of Dermatology (Lehrstuhl) in Breslau in 1872, and he became its head. At the same time he was given the title of Professor extraordinary of the University of Breslau. Thanks to Köbner's commitment, in 1877 the University Department and Polyclinic of Dermatology and Venereal Diseases (Universitätsklinik und Poliklinik für Hautkrankheiten undSyphilis) was set up in Breslau, beingthe second institution of this kind in Prussia. The clinical department was located in the building under the clock tower (Uhrgebäude) within the complex of municipal hospital (Allerheiligen Hospital). Considering the bad state of his health, Köbner had to leave Breslau and go for climatotherapy to North Italy, where he kept working as a dermatologist and was the first one to describe drug-induced reactions to quinine. For health reasons he decided not to return to his home city and settled in Berlin, where he led a private dermatology practice not giving up his educational activity till he died in 1904. Köbner was the founder of the Breslau school of dermatology. His name is associated with several dermatological entities, but first of all it is immortalized in the eponymic phenomenon bearing his name.
