Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Pathology - Year 2019, Vol 9, Issue 3

Abstract

Background: This study is undertaken to study the accuracy of FNAC of palpable thyroid lesions by comparing results of Cytology examination with Histology examination and also to determine hormonal status in each disease pathology. Methods: The present study was carried out in cytopathology laboratory and histopathology laboratory of Department of Pathology, PDU Medical College and Hospital, Rajkot during the July 2009 to August 2011. FNAC was taken and slides were stained by HandE stain and MGG stain and reporting was done. Also Histopathological examination done when the specimen was received in histopathology laboratory. Comparison of the cytology and Histopathology reports were done. Result: Out of 100 cases of thyroid lesions 77 cases were of colloid goiter, 08 cases were of Hyper- plastic thyroid lesion, 06 cases were of thyroiditis, 03 cases were of cystic lesions, 04 cases were of follicular neoplasm, and 02 cases were of papillary carcinoma. Overall sensitivity and specificity of fine needle aspiration cytology of thyroid lesions were 85.7% and 100% respectively. These findings are comparable with results carried out by the other studies reported earlier. Conclusion: Fine needle aspiration cytology is a simple, cost effective, quick, and relatively less painful procedure which can be used as an outdoor patient procedure or as a part of screening programme for the diagnosis of thyroid lesion.
