Morphological and histopathological changes in heart
Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Pathology - Year 2017, Vol 4, Issue 3
Abstract
Background: Cardiac pathology, all over the world is largely autopsy based. A detailed gross study of the heart with photographic records, and histological analysis is still the gold standard for confirmation of ante mortem cardiologic findings. Methodology: Details of all the cases were entered in a proforma prepared for the study. All the hearts with thoracic aorta were fixed in 10% formalin. Relation of the great vessels was noted, any variations were recorded. The heart was examined externally to note the size, weight, fat deposition, course of coronary arteries, scars etc. The left anterior descending artery was studied in situ to note any thickening or hardening of the artery. At 5 mm interval transverse cuts were made along its course to know the extent of atherosclerotic changes. Results: Involvement of left ventricle alone was seen predominantly in 12 cases (46.15%), followed by combined involvement of left ventricle and interventricular septum was seen in 9 (34.61%). Right ventricle and left ventricle combined was seen in 2 (7.69%), right ventricle, left ventricle and IVS in 1 (3.84%) and right ventricle alone in 1(3.84%). Conclusion: There was a varied involvement of left ventricle, right ventricle and interventricular septum.
