Comparison between platelet count by automated analyzer, manual direct and indirect method in thrombocytopenic patients: A prospective hospital laboratory-based study

Abstract

Background: Thrombocytopenia is one of the most common blood disorders. Early diagnosis plays major to reduce the mortality and morbidity. At present several methods are available to estimate the platelet count but accuracy is the most important for the treatment. The present study aimed to estimate the platelet count by three methods for the evaluation of accuracy. Materials and Methods: The study was conducted in the Department of Pathology, Kanyakumari Government Medical College, Asaripallam, Tamil Nadu. 100 patients with thrombocytopenia were included in this study. The blood samples were collected from each patient. They were separated and analyzed by three methods. Group-I (Automated platelet count), Group-II (Assessment of platelet count on Leishman stained peripheral blood smear) and Group-III (Direct Manual counting method using Neubauer counting chamber). All the patients demographic and platelet count was recorded and analyzed. One way ANOVA used for analysis. Results: The mean age of study population was 46.34. Males were more compared to females. Platelet count was significant between the three methods. Manual indirect method showed more reliability compared to others. Conclusion: It was observed that three methods showed significant difference in platelet count. Indirect manual method can be used for the diagnosis of thrombocytopenia because it showed more reliability than other methods.
