Onco-pathological correlation of hormonal receptors and Her2 neu expression in breast cancer
Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Pathology - Year 2017, Vol 1, Issue 2
Abstract
Background: Breast cancer is a complex genetic disease characterized by the accumulation of multiple molecular alterations. Hormone receptor studies such as estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR), and human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 (HER2/neu) are routinely done in breast carcinoma. It not only helps in the prognosis of the tumor but also helps in deciding its treatment. Objectives: To study the Histopathological diagnosis and their ER, PR and Her2/neu receptor status of breast carcinoma and to assess the hormone receptor status and HER2/neu by immunohistochemistry. Results: Out 65 cases 36 (55.38%) cases showed ER positive and remaining 29 (44.61%) showed negative. Similarly for PR, 26 (40%) cases showed positive and 39 (60%) turned out to be negative. 33 (50.76%) cases showed negative for Her2 neu staining, whereas 7 (10.76%) showed +1, 19(29.23%) showed +2 and 6 (9.23%) displayed +3. Conclusion: Tumors that express both ER and PR have the greatest benefit from hormonal therapy, and those containing only ER or only PR still have significant response. HER2/neu has its role as a prognostic indicator and as a predictor of response to Trastuzumab (Herceptin) therapy in breast cancer patients.
