Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Pathology - Year 2018, Vol 8, Issue 3

Abstract

Benign as well as malignant breast lesions are quite common in Indian population. Breast is second most common cancer site after cancer cervix in Indian females. Currently, 75,000 new cases of breast cancer are detected in India yearly. This figure must be viewed against the backdrop that the National Cancer Registry and the Hospital-based Tumor Registries hardly sample 3% of the total population1. The current study was carried out with aims of studying the frequency of various breast lesions on FNAC in a rural area and its histopathological correlation. A cross sectional study was conducted on rural population attending a Medical Teaching Institute of Maharashtra. Total 160 patients coming with breast lesions for FNAC were included in study out of which 154 subjects were females and six were males. Commonest age of presentation was 15-30 years. On cytology 149 (93.12%) cases were benign, six (3.75%) cases were malignant, and five (3.12%) were in Inflammatory category. The commonest benign lesion was fibroadenoma in 86 (53.75%). Six (3.75%) cases were diagnosed cytologically as Ductal cell carcinoma. Biopsy specimens of only 115 subjects were received for histopathology. Two cases that were reported benign on cytology were diagnosed as Infiltrating Ductal cell carcinoma [NOS] on histopathology. 67.5% subjects reported for diagnosis after 6 months duration of symptoms. Most common presentations were lump and nodularity with pain in 60 [37.5%] and 45 [28.1%] cases, respectively. 96.88% cases presented with the breast lump size more than two centimetres.
