"How Philomaths Entertained Themselves? The Role of Play in the Activities of the Society of Philomath in Vilnius".
Journal Title: Українська полоністика (Ukraińska Polonistyka) - Year 2016, Vol 13, Issue 13
Abstract
Researchers usually stress the autotelic and hedonistic character of entertainment, showing it as an activity which main goal is "play in itself" and the participants' pleasure. Entertainment activities organized by the Society of Philomath in Vilnius (1817–1823) and related youth associations (including the Promieniści, called the Society of the Friends of Entertainment and the Association of the Philaret) had a radically different character. These peers of Adam Mickiewicz did not shun entertainment which constituted a very important part of their group functioning. One can even say that the Philomath-Philaret culture was largely the "culture of amusement".
