Hypertension - guidelines update for 2006
Journal Title: Polski Przegląd Kardiologiczny - Year 2006, Vol 8, Issue 5
Abstract
Hypertension remains the major risk factor of cardiovascular diseases and the main threat for public health. From over 20 years series of specific guidelines have been published by the group of experts as well as by scientific societies for effective diagnosis and therapy of the patients with arterial hypertension. These guidelines are based on the results of currentclinical trials and as more data become available under gorelevant updates. The recent clinivcal trials (ASCOT-BPLA, VALUE, LIFE, INVEST) provided certain data on some advantages of the drugs blocking renin-angio-tensin system over beta-adrenolytics. Based on these findings British Hypertension Society recommends to avoid beta-adrenolytics in the treatment of patients with newly diagnoses hypertension. Also, an increased metabolic risk associated with beta-adrenolytics is mentioned.
