Identity, school inclusion and leadership

Abstract
This article makes three themes coalesce: identity, inclusion and leadership. It explores links rather than tensions and conflicts. Democratic citizenship is an interesting issue for reflection in relation to these links. This article starts by delineating what is identity, largely ignored in leadership literature despite of increasing educational interest but in need of a greater understanding. The article then raises the relevance of leadership to identity construction and the role of school leaders in relation to this issue. It concludes by exploring democratic citizenship as a desirable identity to be broadly shared, while being respectful of differences, in pursuit of common goods.
