Influence of polarize optics on nonlinearity in heterodyne interferometers

Abstract
The imperfect polarizing optics, like wave plate and polarizer etc, can affect the nonlinearity of heterodyne interferometer. Our theoretical and experimental analyses show that the same wave plate and the polarizer could affect the nonlinearity of heterodyne interferometer differently depending on where it is placed, which is contrary to general thinking. Imperfections of wave plate and the polarizer optic part would introduce nonlinearity by one hundred percent if it is set in front of the interferometer, but it would be a higher order error if the same wave plate and the polarizer are set inside the interferometer.
