Abstract

The work Interactive New Media Art - an experiment on the body of the viewer is an attempt to answer the question: how the aesthetic situation of viewer is changing because of application of digital technology in the design of interactive art. Can we speak about the emancipation of spectators by engaging in process of creation? In what consist this engaging? Interactivity is an effect of non-linear attributes of the work, which give a possibility of choice and even transforming the structure of the work. Not only relation between the author and the spectator had to change, but the work itself. There is no more closed artefact as an object of contemplation, but the field of artistic practices. The activity of viewer is not already the negotiations of the work’s meaning, any subjecting it to varying interpretations and intertextual game. This activity means the physical intervention on the structure of the work. This requires crossing a contemplative attitude and engaging, physical presence and activity - the body of the spectator. This tallies with the phenomenological arrangements concerning the constitution of reality. According to Edmund Husserl only feedback of touch and sight gives the impression of reality. The more physical activity and more sensory stimulus there are, the bigger the power of immersion is. Every digital art use the body of viewers the in different ways. This body can be defined as physical strength, movement, touch, rhythm or image. But this is never neutral. This body enables the participation in creating process but the ways of creation are determinates from above. This body becomes part of the structure of the work. Viewer’s activity is thus ambiguous and determinted in double set: through the patterns of actions and ways to achieve them. In that case, there can be no simple emancipation of the viewer, nor abolition of the tensions in the aesthetic situation.
