Intraoperative diagnosis of lymphnode imprints in correlation with histopathological diagnosis

Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Pathology - Year 2018, Vol 7, Issue 2

Abstract

Background: Imprint cytology is a quick, practically easy and inexpensive tool for diagnosis of various lesions which was first reported by Dudgeon and Patrick. It provides an excellent cytological clarity in freshly resected surgical specimens and hence considered as useful procedure. Lymphnode lesions are important as a myriad of non neoplastic, neoplastic lesions are associated with it. Forkner was the first person to use imprint technique for cytodiagnosis of excised lymphnodes. Intra operative evaluation of imprint cytology can provide the surgeon with information for immediate clinical management while a waiting for histopathological reports of excisional biopsy. Aims: To study imprint cytology of lymphnode lesions with correlation of final histopathologic diagnosis and to determine diagnostic accuracy. Materials and methods: The present study is a prospective study carried out in the Department of Pathology, from June 2013 to June 2016 in a teaching hospital. 96 cases of fresh surgical Pathology specimens which included excision biopsies were studied for features of Imprint Cytology and correlated with Histopathology. After describing gross features, imprint smears were made and the same tissue was subjected to HP processing Results: Out of 96 cases 88 cases of imprints correlated with histopathology. The sensitivity was 100%, Specificity was 83% and accuracy was 91%.
