Abstract
Behind the scenes of 19th-century photographers’ work. The secrets of adjusting the model’s appearance and retouching pictures as exemplified by selected portraits from the collection of Konstanty Zamoyski in Kozlowka Portrait has been one of the most popular themes of representation ever since photography was invented. With the dawn of photography, people could have their images recorded for posterity relatively cheap and fast for the first time in history. Initially a purely mechanical job, over time it became an art. This paper discusses the retouching methods and painting tricks used by 19th-century photographers to meet the expectations of their refined clientele. In the paper, I reveal the secrets behind the selected photographs from the collection of Konstanty Zamoyski in Kozlowka to demonstrate that the need for “photoshopping” to make adjustments in the image did not emerge with the launch of Photoshop software.
