Journal Title: Medycyna Ogólna i Nauki o Zdrowiu - Year 2013, Vol 19, Issue 2

Abstract

Introduction and objectives. In recent years, an increase has been noted in the number of population aged over 60. It can be assumed that physical activity and body weight are two factors that largely determine the quality of life of the elderly. The objective of the presented study is the assessment of physical activity of students attending the University of the Third Age in Wałcz, who display various height to weight ratios. Material and method. The research sample consisted of 72 students of the University of the Third Age in Wałcz (14 males and 58 females); mean age 60.9 ± 5.8. The study was conducted in March 2012. The method applied was a brief version of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). Results. The highest percentage of both female and male respondents (39.7% and 50.0% respectively) admitted to a low level of physical activity. Overweight was found in 40.3% of the total number of respondents. Among males and females in the study, obesity significantly more frequently correlated with a low level of physical activity (p<0.05), compared to moderate (12.5%) and high level of activity (6.3%). Walking is the form of physical activity most frequently reported by the students of the University of the Third Age (91%). Conclusions. Lack of physical activity and overestimating passive forms of recreation are deeply rooted culturally and most fully manifested after 65 years of age. The way to maintain fitness among Polish seniors is systematic physical activity. There is a demand for behaviour patterns that would shape their needs and habits concerning an active lifestyle. It is necessary to maximize the support programmes for this social group, and engaged in activities not only the regional organizations, but also informal groups, NGOs and local government units.Key words: physical activity, BMI, the elderly, University of the Third Age
