LITERARY TRANSLATION CRITICISM: METHODOLOGY SKETCH

Abstract

The paper considers general tasks, functions and principles of literary translation criticism. That is meant to state a separate status of the literary translation criticism, to tell professional demands to the translators of literary texts from subjective judgements. The critique texts of different genres comprize the research materials. These are reviews, sketches, research papers, theses, monographs, written by translation theorists and practitioners, as well as common readers. A wide range of the materials used gave an opportunity to sort out the tasks solved by the literary translation criticism, and, thereafter, to consolidate them into the groups, subject to definite functions. The latter, in their turn, execute themselves within the translational aspects and principles or use the methodology of other sciences. Namely, it is emphasized that the literary translation criticism lies within the translation, literature, and language studies, and is also inseparable from the translation editing and proofreading. The text- and anthropocentrism are characteristic for the literary translation criticism. The former solves the languages correspondence issues, as well as those of literature and culture studies, while the latter examines the relations within the triad translator-reader-literary polysystem. The following functions were defined to be the basic ones of the literary translation criticism: evaluating, methodological, didactic, learning, explanatory, those of regulation and control, diagnostics and correction, exploratory, cognitive, interpretative, pragmatic, educative, perceptive, utilitarian, praxeological, prognostic, humanitarian, communicative, ideologic, language-creative, culture- and nation-formative. The basic tasks of the literary translation criticism are: setting the translation quality requirements, translators training, facilitation of national translation and its synchronization with the world literary and cultural processes, stimulation of national language and culture development.
