MODERN TRENDS OF TERMINOLOGICAL STUDIES (BASED ON COMPUTER TERMINOLOGY)

Abstract

The article analyses the modern tendencies of terminological studies; the main focus is, in particular, on the various definitions of such concepts as ‘terminology’, ‘science of terminology’, ‘specialty language’, ‘terminological system’; some differences and convergence of these concepts are indicated. The terminological status of such names is clarified, and the certain definitions of these concepts are refined. It is noted that the objective and communicative spheres of a certain professional activity are the main criterion for defining the specialty language. The material of computer terminology shows that the professional language of this area contains terminology, professionalisms and denominations, a stratum of commonly used vocabulary, which serves for a comprehensive description of processes, objects, and phenomena. In the Ukrainian scientific discourse, we observe different views of scholars on the definition of the boundaries of concepts ‘terminology’, ‘study of terms’, ‘specialty language’, ‘terminologicsl system’. This leads to some discrepancies in the understanding of the concept of the term and the terminology system. In our opinion, terminology is a teaching or science of terms. Terminology is an ordered system of terms, which has the following characteristics: absence of terms belonging to several terminological systems at the same time or to any one; integrity, certain constancy; structured character; unambiguousness uniqueness within a single terminology system. Terminology is formed spontaneously; it contains terminological units of all types: branch terms, nomenclature units, professionalisms, terminoids. Computer science specialty language is one of the variants of modern literary language, which is used mainly for specific communication needs of the specialty. A clear understanding of the concepts of study of terms, terminology, terminological system, and specialty language contributes to the appropriate use of these terms in scientific researches, affects the degree of perception of the scientific text, as well as the scientific value of the study, allows to streamline and systematize significant developments in computer terminology.
