DYNAMICS OF VARIATION IN ACCUSATIVE SINGULAR INANIMATE NOMINAL FORMS IN THE STANDARD-ORIENTED REGIONAL UKRAINIAN OF THE 19TH–21ST CENTURIES

Abstract
The paper studies the diatopic variation in use of the two forms of inanimate nominal forms in accusative singular for masculine declension in Ukrainian. The variation in question involves two forms: the one coinciding with nominative (which is the default standard way for inanimate nouns in East Slavic) and coinciding with genitive (according to the pattern attested normally with animate nouns). The degree of this variation (viz. the presence of Accusative = Genitive for inanimates) is different in literary texts created in different regions of Ukraine. The study is based on the General Regionally Annotated Corpus of Ukrainian (GRAC, uacorpus.org) that contains about 190 million tokens of standard-oriented literary representing all the regions of Ukraine since the beginning of the 19th century until the latest decades. This diatopical diversity is partly due to the dialectal diversity of the Ukrainian language that underlies the standard-oriented language. Notably in the 19th century regional standard subnorms, different from the ones developing in Kyiv and Kharkiv regions, existed in Western Ukraine (Halychyna and Bukovyna); after the World War II a certain convergence between these subnorms was achieved, without however eliminating all the diversity. In Western Ukrainan dialects the variation in question is absent; correspondingly it was virtually missing in the corpus of the pre-1918 Ukrainain prose created in the territory of the then Austro-Hungary. After 1945 and the incorporation of Halychyna and Bukovyna to Soviet Ukraine the use of this form grows drastically in the texts created in these regions, first by the authors from the other regions who had migrated to the West, and later by the authors who themselves hail from Lviv and other regions. In other Ukrainian regions the frequency of the variation increases in the periods of the active development of the literary language (1917-1933 and after 1991).
