Abstract
The common works of human beings, languages, differ from each other in their structures and functions. It has been determined by the linguists that languages consist of a certain number of sounds. That thousands of languages are produced with certain and limited amount of sounds and these languages have their own specific structures and functions are something very striking. One of the requirements of being a language is that a language should produce its own linguistic components and functioning. Exclamations are one of these components having the specific structures and functioning. Every language has its own exclamations and these exclamations are used by that language’s users. Exclamations do not have general features like the other components (noun, verb, etc.). They are special in terms of their structures and functions. In this study, exclamations, which have had by far the least study on among the Turkish grammar structures, have been analyzed in terms of their structure and functioning. Primarily, the attitudes of the Turkish grammar books towards exclamations were determined. The differences among the books were emphasized. Based on the explanations of the grammar glossaries, discussion themes about the issue have been set emphasizing the common findings and the insufficiency of the findings on the issue. In order to contribute to the findings about the exclamations in Turkish studies, exclamations were studied in terms of phono-morphologic, semantic, syntax and orthographic features. Depending on the fact that the basic function of the exclamations is to provide expression it has been concluded that exclamations should be evaluated under the subtitle of sentence. This article aims to contribute to the studies done on the exclamations and emphasizes especially two points. Firstly, it is stated that there is no coherence in the usage of exclamations as there is an indefinite pattern in the usage of the words functioning as an exclamation instead of the main exclamations. The other point is that the basic function of the exclamations is not to provide meaning but to provide expression. This study provides significant data on the usages of exclamations in Turkish and also a new perspective towards the studies in this field for scholars.
