« Maman, les p’tits bateaux »

Journal Title: Argotica - Year 2016, Vol 0, Issue 1

Abstract

This paper presents and studies an aspect of the sailors’ language that is very little known: the 162 generic nicknames of ships a per their age, appearance, building, maintenance, staff, sailing, propulsion, nautical qualities and size. Encyclopaedism supplies unedited information, leading, as required, to etymology; this helps putting things back to place. As a conclusion, the marine/sailor language is viewed from an unusual angle: the "jarslang" (Jar(gon) + slang).
