Management of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI): One Year Experience in Bir Hospital

Abstract
This is a retrospective study of traumatic brain injury (TBI) from 1st August 2010 to 31st July 2011, in the Neurosurgical Department of NAMS, Bir Hospital. Different parameters like age, sex, etiology, coma scale (GCS), management strategy, outcome scale (GOS), pathology and ICU management etc were included in our study. Total number of patients was 424 out of which 329(78%) were male and 95 (22%) were female. Considering management strategy 256 (60%) patients got conservative treatment, 168(40%) got surgical treatment followed by 116(27%) got ventilation. Clot evacuation, elevation of depressed fracture, duroplasty, cranial fossa repair and other surgical procedures were done. Conservative management include oxygenation, electrolyte monitoring and management for cerebral edema, infection, hypovolaemia, convulsion and treatment with neuro-protective agents .
