MARKET ORIENTATION AT TURKISH CONTAINER PORTS: DRIVERS AND BARRIERS

Journal Title: Denizcilik Fakültesi Dergisi - Year 2016, Vol 8, Issue 0

Abstract

Turkish ports have been going through a change process during the last 10 years through the acceleration of privatization movements. A new port management mentality that is competition and market-oriented has started to emerge instead of the former operation focused and stakeholder-independent structure. This change is sourced by not only the transformation in governance systems but also the demand that is being reflected from the markets. Logistics perspective that has started to increase its share in maritime transport, is speeding up the pressure on the ports as well as all the other members of service supply chains and encouraging them to adopt market oriented strategies. However, ports are being highly affected by the dynamics of the industry that they operate within while going through this strategy change, and consequently face with a lot of obstacles. The purpose of this study is to discover the drivers and barriers that Turkish container ports face with. The article aims to explore the expert views by Delphi method and identify the prioritized opportunities through the guidance of port managers or experts representing the industry. The findings of the study might provide a systematic resource for port managers, suppliers and customers in Turkey, and new strategies might be developed in order to eliminate the prioritized barriers. Drivers can be used more effectively so that market orientation becomes a new competition tool for all ports. Also the results might provide new variables for scholars studying on port marketing; develop recommendations for testing the relationships between these variables.
