Journal Title: Соціологія: теорія, методи, маркетинг - Year 2018, Vol 4, Issue
Abstract
The purpose of this research paper is to form an approach to the measurement of geopolitical orientations in Ukraine with the subsequent transition to the design of relevant sociological tests. In order to do this, at the initial stage, we identified items relating to geopolitical orientations such as identity, specific features of historical memory, evaluation of the language issue in Ukraine, trust in the international mass media, attitude to the territorial order of Ukraine, evaluation of gas disputes between Russia and Ukraine, value structure, assessment of priority areas of cooperation in the region, distinctive features of the understanding of interests in the sphere of leading geopolitical forces’ activity, and the degree of readiness to accept various consequences of geopolitical choice. Considering these items, we compiled a set of indicators whose relevance was assessed using the results of a special survey. The latter included interviews conducted in Kyiv (n = 34), L’viv (n = 33) and Odesa (n = 33). The data obtained allowed us to construct two sociological tests aimed at measuring geopolitical orientations towards the Russian Federation (RF-Geopol) and the European Union (EU-Geopol). The survey results made it possible to assess the factor and construct validity of both tests, as well as to analyse the respondents’ geopolitical orientations in the context of their sociodemographic characteristics.
