MEMES OF THE UKRAINIAN INTERNET SEGMENT

Abstract
The article dwells on the problems of definition of the notion of the term meme. The purpose of the article is to inform readers with the state memetics in Ukrainian linguistic studies and place of memes in the Ukrainian Internet segment. The popularity of the Internet among Ukrainian society has been gradually growing the past decade and memes has become quite common not only in the Internet groups but in the common media discourse as well. The object of the study is Ukrainian memes, thus the subject is their function and general characteristics. Our findings support the idea of memes as of self-replicating units which follow Darwinian categories necessary for evolutionary process: replication, variation, selection. Thus, all the three properties are results of human creativity and cooperation in social groups, which is illustrated by one of the political memes Krivaviy Pastor (Bloody Pastor, the analogy to the Bloody Mary).
