Abstract

Our article concentrates on issues of memetics. The purpose of the article is to analyze the essence of memes. The object of the study is the Ukrainian memetic space (memescape). The subject of the study is Internet-memes of the Ukrainian segment of the worldwide network. The methodology of our article includes the descriptive method and the method of systematization. In the process, we put two tasks: what exactly can be called a meme and its variations on the Internet; and whether it is possible to consider the name of the Internet meme as a variation of proper name. There are two approaches to interpreting the meme in the memetics: the first considers meme as an idea, the second sees it as a unit of cultural information. Also the second question arose during our research: can the names of Internet memes be considered proper names? The conclusions of our study are as follows: meme is a cultural unit not only of the Internet community, but belongs to the entire society. Its nature is a piece of information that is transmitted through public channels, it is distinguished by its brevity and very rapid dissemination. The name of the Internet meme can be considered a proper name, which based on the fact that it has all the features of traditional proper names: selection from a number of similar ones, polarization in comparison with the rest of the lexical system, individualization and identification.
