METAPHORIZATION OF ALLUSIVE PROPER NAMES: SECONDARY NOMINATIONS
Journal Title: Записки з українського мовознавства - Year 2017, Vol 1, Issue 24
Abstract
Ukrainian modern artistic discourse is characterized by the use of non-traditional means of artistic reality modelling that is reflected in the complex superstructures verbalized in narrative forms and with the help of intertextual persuasions. In the verbal palette of artistic modeling an important role is given to allusive proper names. The purpose is to to explore the ways and processes of metaphorical potential of appellatives and to highlight the differences between comparative and metaphorical potential of allusive names. The article deals with the actual problem of metaphorical rethinking of allusive names from the position of the cognitive linguistics and the intertextuality theory. Characteristically, the process of actualization of a proper name as a metaphorical structure is determined by its own principles. To these principles we include: 1) the principle of categorical transposition (characterized by the transition from one conceptual category to another) and the principle of seme redistribution (involves archiseme change, positional transformation of denotative semes (core-periphery / periphery-core) and augment of connotative seme’s-indicators (actual semes (often supplemented by associative elements)), as a result, we have a secondary nomination of a proper name. So, we can come to the conclusion, that the metaphorical nature of allusive proper name is determined by the following processes: 1) the metaphorical models are one of the means of material construction of allusive units; 2) a high degree of metaphor’s associativity and metaphorical meanings of elements reflect the conceptual sphere of allusive names.
