Abstract
In Turkish political communication metaphors sometimes emerge on the base of literary plots. We suppose this trend to be quite logical, since literature is an integral part of any culture, and the regular use of its products is an indispensable attribute of everyday life of each individual. Thus, the article analyzes metaphors of Turkish politicians, the source of which is the literary plots and characters of the Turkish epic and foreign literature, which made it possible to distinguish such metaphorical models as “POLITICS is a WORLD OF EPIC CHATACTERS” and “POLITICS is a WORLD OF FAIRY TALE CHARACTERS”. The metaphorical model “POLITICS is a WORLD OF EPIC CHARACTERS” includes metaphors based on associ- ations with the characters of the Turkic heroic epic “Book of Dede Korkut” (Turkish: “Dede Korkut Kitabı”), “Epic of Koroghlu” (Turkısh: “Köroğlu”), folk epic “Shirin and Farhad” (Turkish: “Ferhat ve Şirin”). The metaphorical model “POLITICS is a WORLD OF FAIRY TALE CHARACTERS” has proved to be more produc- tive. However, as a result of the study of the actual material, we found that the source for metaphors in the speeches of Turkish politicians are plots not from Turkish fairy tales, but tales of the world’s peoples, which is explained by the active interaction and synthesis of cultures. The study, which was carried out on the rich linguistic material shows, that the characters and some plots of literary works take an important place in the Turkish picture of the world and the views of the Turks about the surrounding reality. At the same time, in the speeches of Turkish politicians we have not found metaphors, the source for which could be the events, objects or characters of Turkish fairy tales, while plots of the foreign fiction are actively metaphorized. This can be explained by the fact that fairy tales of the world’s peoples are translated into different languages and are well-known, and therefore metaphors based on them have also become publicly available. On the other hand, the synthesis of world cultures and liter- atures has had a significant impact on the system of metaphors that have emerged, particularly in the Turkish society.
