Molecular diversity of a population of coconut trees in the region of Baracoa
Journal Title: Biotecnología Vegetal - Year 2007, Vol 7, Issue 1
Abstract
Molecular characterization of 37 coconut (Cocos nucifera L.) ecotypes from a natural population of Baracoa municipality, Guantánamo province, was carried out by using Inverse Sequence Tagged Repeat (ISTR) technique. This method was able to detect the high polymorphism (93%) of the evaluated population showing its usefulness for studies on molecular diversity in coconut. The identification percentage was also relatively high (Pi= 86%) suggesting that the selected primer combinations could be used for the ecotype identification studies on coconut populations of Baracoa. Evaluation of the diversity in different coconut ecotypes by means of ISTR markers showed a low level of variability within the population studied in Baracoa region. These data suggest that coconut populations in this zone have been originated from coconuts with a relatively small quantity of seeds or even from introduced materials from populations of low diversity.

Comparison of three total RNA extraction methods from cacao leaves
The establishment of a method for extracting total RNA in plants that meets the required criteria of purity and yield is a critical step for subsequent molecular studies, especially in recalcitrant plants with naturally...
Physiological indices associated with the growth of varieties of potato obtained by biotechnological methods
The aim of this work was to evaluate physiological indexes associated with growth of potatoes varieties (Solanum tuberosum L.) micropropagated using biotechnological methods. Minitubers with 10-15 grams of ‘Grettel’, ‘...
Evaluation of Pectimorf as a growth regulator in the formation of callus with embryogenic structures in Ipomoea batatas
Tuberous roots of sweet potato belonging to the clone INIVIT B 93-1, were gather ad and placed in flasks with water in the laboratory to induce the emergence of the yolks. Later on, explants of the limbo was selected to...
Callus formation and somatic embryos of Cocos nucifera L. cv. Yellow Indian in semi-solid culture medium
The objective of this work was evaluated the effect of the concentration of 2,4-D and the type of explant in the formation of callus of Cocos nucifera L. cv. Indio Amarillo. The biggest percentages of explants with callu...
Identification and phylogeny of the tomato receptor-like proteins family
The receptor-like proteins (RLPs) play multiple roles in development and defense. In the current work 75 RLPs were identified in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) using iterative BLAST searches and domain prediction. A p...
