Moscow magazine «KukArt» ( 1990-2000): revising a doll

Abstract
Russian magazine “KukArt” was on representation and description of a doll in the different aspects — cultural, theatrical, and sociological - orientated. In the present article seven issues of “KukArt” from different points of view are analyzed. The very idea of creating and publishing a magazine with a doll thematic firstly in 1978 was articulated. Yuri Lotman after an ask of Irina Uvarova wrote an article “Dolls in a system of culture” (Kukli v sisteme kultury) which made possible to put a doll in a broad system of culture and to talk/write about it in a scientific discourse. All issues of the magazine are thematically various. “KukArt” magazine’s experience by revising a doll in a system of culture illustrates one of the philosopher Merab Mamardashvili’s thesis about a thing ( a doll), which gets different interpretations in the different cultures and epochs, but for all that possessing unique common indications, that allows to articulate a phenomenology of a doll. “KukArt” demonstrates historical changes in a man’s attitude to a thing-doll, using as an examples texts of literature and folklore, contemporary art practices and mass culture strategies.
