Journal Title: The Journal of International Social Research - Year 2017, Vol 10, Issue 53
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the narcissism levels of physical education and sport college students and to determine the relationship between socio-demographic variables and their levels. A total of 277 students, 118 (%42,6) female and 159 (%57,4) male, participated the study, which are the different parts of Kafkas University school of physical education and sports. 56,3% of the study group (n=156) was composed of individuals aged 21-23 years while 30,7 % of the study group (n=85) was composed of individuals aged 18-20 years. In the study; Narcissistic Personality Inventory NPI [which was designed by Ames DR et al. (2006), adapted into Turkish by Atay (2009), had 16 items and was consisted of six subscales -exhibitionism, superiority, authority, entitlement, self-sufficiency, exploitativeness] were used. For the analyses of the data, Portable IBM SPSS Statistics v20 package program was used. One sample “Kolmogorov-Smirnov” test was employed in order to know whether or not the data followed a normal distribution and it was seen that the data did not follow a normal distribution. Later on, Anova-Homogenety of variance test was used in order to know whether or not the data were homogenous and it was seen that the data were not homogenous. Following these initial analyses; it was decided to use non-parametric test methods for the statistical analyses of the data and “Mann Whitney U” test and “Kruskal Wallis-H” tests were employed to determine whether or not there was a significant difference between narcissism and socio-demographic variables. At the end of the statistical analysis, it was seen that the average score of "Narcissistic Personality Inventory" of the students was 6.85 ± 2.62. When the relationship between narcissism levels of students and socio-demographic variables is examined, it has been tested that in the " exploitativeness " sub-dimension, female students show a significantly higher narcissistic tendency than male students in terms of gender. In terms of the "exhibitionism" sub-dimension between the age groups and the narcissism levels of the students, the narcissistic tendencies of the 18-20 age group were found to be significantly higher than the other age groups. When the situation was evaluated in terms of "sibling number", the scores of "total narcissistic" and "superiority" subscale scores of non-siblings students were found to be significantly higher than those of their siblings. As a result; it is seen that the narcissistic tendencies of the students’ constituting the research group are in an acceptable range when the literature is examined and it is seen that the number of age, sex and siblings are the predictors of the narcissistic tendency.
