EFFECT OF CUTTING PARAMETERS ON THE MULTIPLE RESPONSES

Abstract

The present work is to explore the effect of cutting parameters (speed, feed and depth of cut) on the responses in the machining of a medium carbon steel EN8. The experiments were conducted on a conventional lathe using a tungsten carbide tool under dry environment. Taguchi’s standard L27 Orthogonal Array has been used for the experiment. Material Removal Rate (MRR) and Surface Roughness (Ra) were considered as the experimental responses. Taguchi based Grey Relational Grade method has been employed for the optimization of the multiple-responses. From the grey results, the optimal combination of the multiple-responses were found at v3-f3-d3, i.e. speed at 760 rpm, feed at 0.3 mm/rev and depth of cut at 1.5 mm respectively. Main effect plots for Grey Relational Grade (GRG) was drawn using MINITAB-16 software. From the main effect plots, it is found that the main effect is due to speed followed by the depth of cut and feed in affecting the multiple-responses.
