Study of Lipid Peroxidation and Antioxidant Status in Preeclampsia

Journal Title: Journal of Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences University - Year 2013, Vol 2, Issue 2

Abstract

Background: Preeclampsia is a pregnancy specificsyndrome, a leading cause of maternalfetalmorbidity and mortality. Free radicals leadto lipid peroxidation which is destructive innature and has been suggested as an aetiologicalfactor in preeclampsia. Aims and Objectives:To determine the role oxidative stress and levelof antioxidants in preeclampsia by estimationof malondialdehyde (MDA) (index of lipidperoxidation) and antioxidants such as uric acid, vitamin C, vitamin E and superoxide dismutase(SOD) in preeclampsia. Material and Methods:In present study 40 non pregnant women,40 normal pregnant women and 40 preeclampticwomen aged between 18-35 years were enrolled.Clinically diagnosed preeclampticwomen were compared with normal pregnantwomen of same gestational age and serum wasanalyzed for serum MDA, uric acid, vitamin Eand vitamin C and SOD. Statistical analysis wasdone by ANOVA followed by Tukey’s multiplecomparison. Results: Serum MDA and uric acidlevels were significantly raised (P<0.01) inpreeclamptic women as compared to normalpregnant women and non pregnant women whileserum antioxidant vitamin E, vitamin C, andSOD levels were significantly decreased(P<0.01) in preeclamptic women and normalpregnant women as compared to non pregnantwomen. Conclusion: Increased levels of lipidperoxidation product (MDA) and depletion ofantioxidants such as vitamin E, vitamin C andSOD except uric acid in women with preeclampsiamay suggest that oxidative stress plays a keyrole in the genesis of endothelial dysfunctionand expression of preeclampsia. Adjuvantsupplementation of these antioxidants excepturic acid to the diet may minimize further progressionof preeclampsia.
